Arrived in Kaiapoi .
Most agree that the proper form of the name is Kaiapohia, meaning the food depot . But some South Island Maori people say that it has always been Kaiapoi : Kai ; food ; poi ; swung . The pa or fortified village was in a strategic position and adequate food supplies could be swung towards it from all directions.
