Early start on Saturday for a trip to Camber Sands with Lindsay & Barley.

Camber is my favourite beach on the South East Coast because whether the tide is in or out, there are acres of sand for a Spangle to run around on.

She had a fantastic time beachcombing, running, digging & of course fetching.

We walked amongst the dunes, stunt-kites & crab-shells for over 4 hours.

At the cafĂ© where we stopped for hot-dogs (sausages, not proper frankfurters) we got chatting to a lovely couple with a 3 yr old Border Collie, ‘Brock’. He was surprisingly calm for a Border & even happily shared his lunch with Barley.

On the way back to the car we saw the most fantastically named ‘Mini-Vegas’, an amusement arcade which covered all of 15 square feet. Seated in 2 beach chairs next to their car, in the car park, were an elderly couple.

Barley approached them & dropped a filthy, sandy ball onto the man’s immaculate chinos. I went to grab her & as one they chorused ‘We have just lost our dog’ & made a huge fuss of Barley. I was probably a bit more easily affected than I would be normally but it struck me as tremendously sad when they said that they hadn’t got used to her not being there any more & still expected to see her in every room in their house.

We took our leave of Camber & headed to Rye, a pretty harbour town for a stroll.

Numerous antique shops & a cold Guinness later, we headed off for the long drive to Brighton & one of my all-time favourite meals … Harry Ramsden’s fish & chips. For anyone who doesn’t know, Harry IS fish & chips in Yorkshire.

I have never found fish to rival the haddock they serve & quite frankly most Southern fish stinks of wee. Sorry-but it’s true.

It was the type of day that reminds you of all the good things about a person with none of the pain.

On returning to Bookham we watched some videos on trout fishing in New Zealand.

A good end to a perfect day.

The beginning of letting go & saying good-bye.

I look forward to being able to think of Lindsay without it hurting.
